Questions, answered plainly.

The questions founders ask before working with me, including the ones about limits.

01The work

The work

What is founder presence?

Founder presence is what buyers, partners and hires can find, understand and check about a founder and their company when they look. It covers the founder's profile and published thinking, how search engines and AI assistants describe the company, and the routes that put that material in front of the right people. OwnedSignal builds it from expertise the founder already has, gathered through interviews, research and customer conversations.

Is this ghostwriting?

No. I am not offering a ghostwriting service. I work closer to the founder and the business than that: interviews, customer conversations, product knowledge, research and market evidence are used to work out what is worth saying publicly and where it should live.

Some of that becomes written content. The engagements also cover search and AI discovery, research, distribution, partnerships and owned channels, depending on what is holding your presence back. You approve anything published under your name.

Do I need to post every day?

No. How often something is published depends on the engagement, how much useful material the interviews and research produce, and where it can actually reach the right people. A strong answer page or one well-placed interview can matter more than a weekly posting habit. Volume is never the measure of the work.

How much founder time does this require?

Little. About 2 to 3 hours a month for Founder Presence, about 3 for Founder Presence + Discovery and about 4 for Founder Presence + Distribution. That covers one interview a month, approvals and a short review. The Founder Presence Sprint takes about 2 to 3 hours in total. I do the research, production, coordination and reporting.

Do you use AI?

Yes, openly. I use AI for research support, transcription, analysis and checking drafts. Opinions and examples come from real source material: your interviews, your calls, your data or cited research. Your thinking is never invented, claims are checked, and you approve anything published under your name.

Will it sound like me?

It should, and it gets closer each month. From the interviews and your corrections I learn your language, your opinions, how you explain technical points and what you would never say. That record is kept in a voice and intelligence file that the whole engagement uses, from posts to answer pages to partner material. If something does not sound like you, it does not go out.

What is the Owned Media Signal Stack?

It is the method behind the work. Founder presence is what I help you build; the stack describes how that presence can compound over time, layer by layer: founder signal, search and AI discovery, conversations, borrowed reach through partners, and an owned audience. Different founders need different layers. We start with the current constraint and add a layer only when it has a job.

02Results and limits

Results and limits

Will this guarantee leads?

No. Founder presence makes it easier for the right people to find and trust you. It cannot guarantee that any particular person buys.

I report on what can be observed: relevant replies, pieces used in sales conversations, profile and page visits, and how search and AI answers describe you.

Do you manage paid ads?

No. The work is organic. I spent years in paid media, so I can tell you when ads make sense alongside this, but running them is outside the scope.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of making your company easier to find, understand and cite in AI answers such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO: clear pages that answer real questions, consistent information about who you are, and sources other sites trust.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT mentions?

No. Nobody outside the AI companies controls what their assistants say, and answers change between runs of the same question. I can improve what is available for them to find and measure the change in a documented way.

03Channels

Channels

Do I need a newsletter?

Not necessarily. A newsletter makes sense when you have a steady source of useful material and buyers who read. It is one of two owned channels considered in Founder Presence + Distribution, and we choose it only if the evidence supports it.

Do I need a podcast?

Usually not a full podcast. A recorded interview format can work well for founders who explain things better out loud. Appearing as a guest on existing shows is often a better first step than starting your own.

04Choosing

Choosing

Which 90-day engagement should I choose?

Founder Presence if the main gap is your profile and published media. Founder Presence + Discovery if buyers research your category through search and AI and your company is missing or unclear there. Founder Presence + Distribution if you want to build an organic route that reaches buyers repeatedly and you want me closer to sales. The fit call is where we decide.

What happens after 90 days?

We review results against what we agreed at the start. You can stop and keep everything, continue with a new 90-day scope, or move to a different engagement.

Nothing renews automatically.

Can we start smaller?

Yes. The Founder Presence Sprint is a 21-day engagement for founders who want to try the process before committing to 90 days: one interview, focused research, three finished assets and a review of what a longer engagement should focus on.

The 90-day engagements remain the main way to work together.

How does payment work?

Each engagement is priced for the full 90 days. The payment schedule and the terms of the day 21 checkpoint are set out in the written proposal before you commit.

05Fit

Fit

Do you work with pre-revenue startups?

Generally no. The work depends on real material: customers, product decisions, sales conversations. If you have serious paid pilots, we can talk.

Do you work with non-technical companies?

Occasionally, when the purchase is complex and trust in the founder matters. The focus is technical AI and B2B SaaS, where the gap between what the founder knows and what the market can see tends to be largest.

We already have a marketer. Does this still make sense?

Often yes. Internal marketers find it hard to get time and depth from the founder. I can run the extraction and media work alongside them and hand over the voice file and research so they can use it.
