What AEO means for a B2B SaaS company
AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of making a company easier to find, understand and cite when people ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features about a problem or category.
For a B2B SaaS company it mostly means clear pages that answer real buyer questions, consistent information about the company and founder, and being discussed by sources other sites trust. Google says no special optimization beyond good SEO is required for its AI features.
A plain definition
Answer engines are systems that respond to a question with an answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO is the practice of making your company a clear, accurate and citable part of those answers. You will also see it called GEO, generative engine optimization. The terms describe the same work.
Why B2B SaaS companies care
Buyers use these tools during research. In G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers, 71% said they rely on AI chatbots for software research and 51% said they start with chatbots more often than with Google. G2 sells review-site visibility, so it has an interest in the topic, but the direction matches other surveys.
There is also a click problem. Pew Research Center analysed the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025 and found that people clicked a result link on 8% of Google visits that showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Fewer clicks means the answer itself matters more.
What Google says
Google's own guidance on its AI features is direct. It says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, that existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile, and that you do not need to create new machine-readable files or special markup. It also describes a "query fan-out" technique, where the system runs several related searches to assemble an answer.
That has two consequences. Most of what helps in Google's AI features is what already helps in Google search. And many AEO tactics sold as new are either ordinary SEO or unproven.
What a sensible AEO effort includes
- Buyer-question research. List the questions buyers ask before choosing a product like yours, from sales calls, support tickets, communities and search data.
- Pages that answer those questions directly. One page per substantial question, with the answer near the top and evidence below it.
- Consistent entity information. The same company name, description, founder and category everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, directories, review sites. See entity clarity for search and AI.
- Crawl access. Allow the crawlers that power AI search, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, unless you have a reason not to.
- Third-party mentions. Reviews, interviews, partner pages and community discussions where your company is described accurately.
- Repeated measurement. A fixed set of questions checked across assistants over time. See how to measure AI visibility.
What to be skeptical of
- Guaranteed citations or rankings. No one outside the AI companies controls their answers.
- Single-screenshot reports. Answers vary between runs of the same question.
- Mass-produced pages. Google's spam policies describe "scaled content abuse": many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help users.
- llms.txt as a fix. See does llms.txt help AI visibility.
Where the founder fits
A founder's specific, verifiable explanations are useful raw material for AEO. They give the company something to say that competitors cannot copy, and they make pages more credible to the buyers who check them afterwards. In practice, the strongest AEO pages for a technical company are usually written from founder interviews.
Common follow-up questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
Mostly no. Google says its AI features rely on the same fundamentals as search. The differences are in emphasis: answering specific questions directly, consistent entity information, and measuring presence in answers rather than rank positions.
How long does AEO take to show results?
There is no reliable timeline. New pages need to be crawled and indexed, and AI answers change frequently. Plan to measure over months, against a dated baseline.
